Working from home: A nightmare or a dream? We list our top tips!

Updated: Sep 11, 2020

Working from home always sounded like the dream.. that was until the reason made life really scary, the home got much busier with partners and children, the dog is continuously crying for a walk, and you have to allocate 3 hours to get the food shop over and done with.

Staying motivated, focused and productive at home can be a struggle, especially during this time. Here are our top tried and tested tips for working at home:

  • Get dressed- Feeling fabulous can sometimes start with dressing fabulously (or just getting out of your pyjamas!). It can be so important to separate your downtime and your working time.

  • Create a workspace- Allowing yourself adequate space to work is crucial. It can help to limit your distractions and increase your productivity. The right at home set up is essential, so remember to ensure the following:

  1. Support your lower back when sitting

  2. Get your chair height right so you can use the keyboard with your wrists and forearms straight and level with the floor

  3. Place your screen at eye level

  4. Have the keyboard straight in front of you

  5. Keep your mouse close

  6. Make objects easy to reach

  • Don’t force yourself to sit all day- Just like you would at work, take a proper lunch break! Give your eyes and mind a break. If you are able to, and it is safe to, take yourself on your daily walk to break up your day. Don’t feel tied to your computer.

  • Structure your day- To-do lists are our go to! There is nothing better than crossing every item from your to-do list. As the list gets smaller, your sense of achievement gets bigger. Trying to do too many things at once can also become overwhelming. Allow yourself time to give each task your full attention. Top tip: Buy a new organiser (pretty stationary is our weakness!)

  • Stay connected- Catch up with your work colleagues! See how they are managing to navigate working from home. Talk about your plans for the day and check in with each other for some motivation.

Try to remember that this won’t last forever, focus on the positives that this new routine gives you.

Some of the positives that we at Equal Accountancy have been enjoying are:

  • Changing our routine in the mornings which is our usual commuting time! Sometimes through reading a book in the extra 30 minutes in bed, sometimes just sleeping for the extra 30 minutes in bed.

  • Enjoying having our morning coffee by making the most of the sunshine in our garden rather than in the office.

  • Having more time with our partners, often sharing lunch and going on a mid day walk together to break up the day.

  • Being home to cuddle our dog all day every day!

A welcome working distraction!
